Known from the Cunene and Okavango southwards to the Pongolo, northeast Natal (northern Zululand) (Ref. 7248). Present in the Dwaars River, the Incomati and the Limpopo (Ref. 43912). Considering the progress made during the first season of experiments Kruger & Polling (1984) concluded that the butter catfish warrants further investigation as an exciting new possible contribution to the range of aquaculture species (Ref. 43912).
